The Story

WhistlePig FarmStock Rye Crop 001. WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vermont β€” the inaugural release of WhistlePig's farm-to-bottle program, the first expression to blend WhistlePig's own estate-grown rye whiskey with older sourced ryes, presenting a triple-tier blend of the raw boldness of estate whiskey alongside the richness of five to six-year ryes and the complexity of a 12-year expression β€” the first proof of concept that WhistlePig's farm vision was producing real whiskey.

Crop 001 is a historic document: the first time WhistlePig released its own farm-distilled spirit as part of a blended expression. The estate component β€” young, bold, and full of the untamed character that only youth can provide β€” was not yet ready to stand alone. WhistlePig blended it with five to six-year ryes for richness and integrated it with a 12-year component for depth and complexity. The result captures all three stages of the farm-to-bottle journey in a single glass: the raw energy of the estate, the development of mid-aged rye, and the profundity of long-matured whiskey.

The occasion was WhistlePig calling it a "historic step" because it was exactly that β€” proof that the Vermont farm was not just sourcing and finishing other distillers' rye, but producing its own grain-to-glass spirit. Crop 001 was the first evidence of that ambition becoming real.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Abundant oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee, and mint β€” the complexity of three rye age tiers combined.
  • Palate: Caramel, cinnamon, and baking spices with hints of citrus and stone fruit. The triple-tier blend creates a more layered palate than any single age component could achieve alone.
  • Finish: Complex and enduring with winter fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, butterscotch, and vanilla founded in classic rye spice. One of the more complex finishes in the FarmStock series.

Specs

  • Distillery: WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vermont
  • Blend: Estate rye + 5–6yr ryes + 12yr rye (triple-tier)
  • Style: Straight Rye Whiskey, FarmStock Series Crop 001
  • Size: 750ml

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Crop 001 historically significant? It was the first WhistlePig release to incorporate the farm's own estate-distilled rye. Before Crop 001, WhistlePig sourced all its rye distillate from Canadian distilleries and finished it in Vermont. Crop 001 proved the farm's own distillation program was producing real whiskey worthy of blending and release.
  • How does Crop 001 differ from later FarmStock releases? As successive crops have been released, the proportion of estate-grown rye in the blend has increased and the estate component has matured further. Crop 001 is the most historically significant β€” the founding release β€” while later crops show a more developed estate character. Each crop is a snapshot of the farm's production evolution.
