The Story
23 years. Vintage Rye — the oldest age-statement rye in the current Wooden Cork collection, and one of the oldest commercially available American straight rye expressions from any source.
At 23 years, this rye has been maturing since approximately the early 2000s — well before the craft rye revival transformed the category. The 23 Year is two years older than the Vintage Rye 21 Year also in the collection, and represents the absolute outer limit of what surviving pre-revival rye stock has produced. No current commercial distillery can offer an own-distilled 23-year rye; what exists at this age is entirely from barrels that were laid down before the modern era.
The character of 23-year rye is categorically different from anything in the current production spectrum — the grain and spice notes that define younger rye have been almost entirely absorbed into the oak, with dried fruit, dark chocolate, antique leather, and the kind of deep, meditative complexity that only extreme age produces.
