The Story

Cask #10588. Filled December 6th, 1970. Matured undisturbed in this single cask for over half a century. One of three sibling casks from Glenrothes filled on the same day — each bottled separately to showcase the personality differences individual casks develop over 50 years.

On December 6th, 1970, three casks were filled with Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Over the following half-century, each cask matured undisturbed while developing its own individual character — the result of subtle differences in wood density, warehouse position, and the specific alchemy each barrel develops with its distillate. The Last Drop Distillers bottled each of the three sibling casks separately, allowing collectors to compare what 50+ years of individual cask maturation produces from the same fill date and distillery.

The Last Drop Distillers was founded in 2008 by Tom Jago and James Espey to find, preserve, and bottle the world's oldest and rarest forgotten spirits. Their Glenrothes 1970 sibling cask project represents the pinnacle of this mission: three casks filled on the same day, separated for half a century, reunited in bottle to document the remarkable individuality of long-matured single cask Scotch whisky.

Tasting Notes — Cask #10588

  • Nose: If you've ever had a campfire interrupted by rain — smoky wet wood, vanilla, cooked bananas, a hint of sandalwood, and touches of dried fruits.
  • Palate: Fruity and vibrant on top with fresh berries and tropical fruits. A dark undertone of oak tannins and smoke balanced by gentle spices underneath — delightfully complex.
  • Finish: Very long with gentle spices and touches of fruit and smoke. Outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes the sibling cask concept significant? All three casks (#10586, #10588, #10589) were filled from the same distillation at Glenrothes on December 6th, 1970. They started identical. Over 50+ years, each developed its own character through the individuality of its specific barrel wood, warehouse microenvironment, and the unique interaction between distillate and cask. Tasting the three side by side is among the most direct demonstrations of single cask individuality available in Scotch whisky.
  • How does cask #10588 differ from #10586 and #10589? All three share the fundamental Glenrothes 1970 character but express different emphases. Cask #10589 was described as showing smoky wet wood and tropical vibrancy; #10588 shares these qualities with its own specific emphasis. The most revealing way to experience the difference is to taste all three together — a comparison available only through Last Drop's decision to bottle them separately.
  • What is Glenrothes and why is 1970 significant? Glenrothes is a Speyside distillery established in 1879. The 1970 vintage predates modern production methods and represents Glenrothes at a specific moment in Scottish whisky history before the consolidations and modernizations of the 1980s and 1990s changed production across the industry.
  • Is Cask #10588 still available? Yes — in extremely limited quantities. Single cask releases at this age are finite by definition.
