The Story

18 years. Peated Malt. 2025 Edition. 700ml. Suntory The Hakushu — the peated expression in Suntory's 18-year Hakushu tier, from the mountain distillery in the Japanese Southern Alps that produces some of the most distinctive whisky in the Suntory portfolio.

Hakushu sits at 700 meters altitude in the Kobushigatake mountain region, surrounded by forest and drawing on pure snowmelt water. The environment produces a naturally lighter, fresher distillate than Yamazaki's valley-floor production — and the peated malt expression adds a layer of smoky maritime character that distinguishes it from the standard Hakushu 18. The 18-year age statement represents the longest standard aged expression in the Hakushu lineup, with the peated malt at this age a particularly rare combination.

The 2025 Edition continues the annual release cadence of the 18-year peated expressions following years of limited availability when Suntory temporarily suspended 12-year and 18-year releases to allow aged stock to mature.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the Hakushu 18 Peated differ from the standard Hakushu 18? The peated malt expression uses peated barley in the distillation, adding smoke and maritime character to Hakushu's naturally fresh, forest-influenced profile. The standard 18 is unpeated, delivering cleaner fruit and oak character without the smoke layer.
