The Story
21 years from Campbeltown — Scotland's smallest and most historically significant whisky region. Springbank's 21 Year is one of the most anticipated annual limited releases from an entirely family-owned distillery that has never compromised its production standards in over 200 years.
Campbeltown once had over 30 distilleries — it was the whisky capital of the world in the 19th century. Today, only three distilleries operate in Campbeltown, and Springbank is by far the most significant. The Mitchell family has owned and operated Springbank continuously since 1828, making it one of the longest family-owned distilleries in Scotland. Crucially, Springbank is the only Scottish distillery that handles every step of production on site: malting (partially floor-malted on premises), mashing, fermenting, distilling, maturing, and bottling. No other Scottish distillery maintains this complete production chain.
The 21 Year is Springbank's annual limited expression at its most mature age statement — released in small quantities each year from carefully selected casks. At 21 years in Campbeltown's maritime climate, Springbank develops a profile of tropical fruit, dried citrus, light sea salt, gentle smoke, and the deep oak integration of extended aging. It is consistently rated among the world's finest single malts.
Tasting Notes

- Nose: Tropical fruit, dried citrus, light brine, and gentle smoke — the Campbeltown maritime character fully expressed at 21-year depth.
- Palate: Complex and multi-layered — fruit, vanilla, oak spice, and the light coastal salinity that Campbeltown's location produces in extended-maturation expressions.
- Finish: Long and evolving — the complexity of 21 years in Springbank's Campbeltown warehouses unwinding through a deeply satisfying close.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is Springbank particularly significant among Scottish distilleries? Springbank is the only Scottish distillery that handles every step of production on site — floor malting, mashing, fermenting, distilling, maturing, and bottling. It has been continuously family-owned since 1828 without corporate acquisition. In an industry dominated by large groups, Springbank's complete independence and production integrity is essentially unique.
- What is Campbeltown and why is it a separate whisky region? Campbeltown is a small town on the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll. It was once Scotland's whisky capital with 30+ distilleries in the 19th century. Today only three operate (Springbank, Glengyle, and Glen Scotia). Campbeltown's maritime position — surrounded by sea on three sides — imparts distinctive brine and coastal character to its whisky.
- Is the Springbank 21 Year released annually? Yes — in very limited quantities. Springbank's releases are allocated to a small number of specialty retailers and frequently sell out quickly after release.
- Is the Springbank 21 Year still available? 1 unit in current stock.
