The Story

Rhum Clement Canne Bleue. Habitation Clement, Le François, Martinique — an exceptional single-varietal white rhum agricole crafted exclusively from blue sugarcane (Canne Bleue), rested just over six months in stainless steel vats and slowly reduced with distilled volcanic spring water, creating a remarkably well-integrated, full-bodied white rhum with bright aromas of fresh meringue, powdered sugar, cucumber, and cane stalk and a long, tingling finish of pepper, sweet cream, talc, and wet stone — unlike any other rum in the world.

While most rhum agricole blends several cane varieties, Canne Bleue is made exclusively from one — the blue cane varietal, known for producing an intensely aromatic juice with a distinctive character that single-varietal production amplifies. This focus on one cane type is the Clement equivalent of a single-vineyard wine or a single-malt whisky: the terroir and botanical character of one specific plant expressed without blending dilution.

After distillation, the rhum rests for just over six months in stainless steel vats — long enough to integrate the spirit, not long enough to add cask influence. It is then reduced slowly with distilled volcanic spring water from Martinique, preserving the mineral quality of the island's water alongside the fresh cane character of the Canne Bleue varietal. The result is a blanc agricole with meringue, powdered sugar, and cucumber aromatics — profile elements that reflect the blue cane's particular aromatic character — finishing with a long, mineral, tingling close that sets it apart from every other blanc on the market.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright aromas of fresh meringue, powdered sugar, cucumber, and cane stalk. The single-varietal blue cane character is immediately distinctive — lighter and more mineral than blended blanc expressions.
  • Palate: Supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-full body. The blue cane's aromatic character comes through cleanly without blending dilution — fresh, precise, and distinctly Martinique.
  • Finish: Long with a tingling sensation of pepper, sweet cream, talc, and wet stone. The volcanic spring water reduction adds mineral depth to the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Rhum Clement Canne Bleue taste like? Fresh meringue, powdered sugar, cucumber, and cane stalk on the nose. Supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-full body on the palate. Long finish with tingling pepper, sweet cream, talc, and wet stone.
  • What is Canne Bleue? Blue sugarcane — a specific varietal selected for its distinctively aromatic juice. Producing rhum from only one cane varietal (rather than blending multiple varieties) is unusual and creates a more precise, terroir-specific expression of that cane's character. Canne Bleue's aromatics are lighter, more mineral, and more floral than typical blended Martinique sugarcane.
  • Why use volcanic spring water for reduction? Reducing rhum with distilled volcanic spring water rather than neutral water preserves the mineral character of Martinique's geology. The island's volcanic soil infuses the water with mineral compounds that add depth and complexity to the finish — the wet stone and talc notes in Canne Bleue's finish reflect this deliberate choice.
  • Is this better neat or in cocktails? Both — the 50% ABV and distinctive blue cane character make it worth sipping neat with a small amount of water to open the aromatics. In a Ti' Punch, it delivers a more mineral and precise version of the classic cocktail. Also excellent in any agricole application where its unique character can be appreciated.
