The Story

Leopold's Summer Gin. Leopold Bros. Distillery, Denver, Colorado β€” a limited seasonal release from Todd Leopold, distilling each botanical individually and featuring Spanish blood oranges, French immortelle flowers, and Australian lemon myrtle for a citrus-forward gin built specifically for summer.

Leopold Bros. is one of the pioneering craft distilleries in the United States, founded in Denver, Colorado by brothers Todd and Scott Leopold. Todd Leopold is one of the few American distillers to have studied at the Heriot-Watt distilling program in Edinburgh, and his approach to gin-making reflects that academic rigor: every botanical in Leopold's gins is distilled entirely separately, in its own batch, before being blended together. This individual-distillation method allows each ingredient to express its fullest character without being dominated by others in the still β€” a technique that produces a more nuanced, layered result than co-distillation.

Summer Gin is released in small quantities and is specifically designed around warm-weather botanicals. Spanish blood oranges contribute a rich, complex sweetness. French immortelle flowers β€” also called everlasting or helichrysum β€” add a distinctive honey-like, slightly curry-scented character that is unlike any other botanical used in gin. Australian lemon myrtle delivers a fresh, crisp citrus finish that is more aromatic and vibrant than standard lemon peel. Juniper from France adds the classic gin backbone. The result is a gin that is bright, citrus-forward, and distinctly seasonal β€” as refreshing in a G&T as it is complex enough to sip neat.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright and citrus-forward β€” blood orange leads with lemon myrtle's crisp, lemon-verbena-like freshness. Juniper is present but lighter than in Leopold's standard expressions. Floral immortelle adds a soft, honeyed warmth.
  • Palate: Fresh and vibrant. Blood orange sweetness upfront, followed by the distinctive citrus clarity of lemon myrtle. Juniper provides evergreen structure mid-palate. A gentle floral complexity from immortelle lingers throughout.
  • Finish: Clean and refreshing with a bright citrus close and a subtle floral fade. Long and elegant for a summer gin.
