KÅloa Kaua'i Coconut Rum. KÅloa Rum Company, Kalaheo, Kaua'i, Hawai'i â the first and only licensed rum distillery on Kaua'i, twice-distilled in a vintage 1,210-gallon steam-powered copper pot still from pure Hawaiian cane sugar and pristine rainwater from ancient Mount Wai'ale'ale.
Sugarcane first arrived in Hawai'i with the ancient Polynesian voyagers. Commercial sugar production in Hawai'i was first established in the town of KÅloa in 1835 â making Kaua'i's KÅloa the birthplace of Hawai'i's sugar industry. When the first harvest came in by 1837, local legend holds that rum production began quietly alongside it. KÅloa Rum Company carries that legacy forward as the island's first licensed distillery, founded in 2009, distilling all its rums on-site in Kalaheo from pure cane sugar and volcanic mountain water.
Every KÅloa rum begins with the same foundation: pure cane sugar and water filtered through the volcanic strata of Mount Wai'ale'ale â one of the wettest places on earth â then twice-distilled in a vintage 1,210-gallon steam-powered copper pot still. The Coconut expression layers natural coconut character onto that base, producing a coconut rum built on genuine double-distilled Hawaiian cane spirit rather than the neutral grain spirit base common to many coconut rums. The result is drier and more complex than typical coconut liqueurs.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Intense coconut aromatics with light hints of roasted coconut and piña colada undertones.
- Palate: The initial taste is quizzically dry from the honest 80-proof base, which then opens to fresh baby coconut flesh at the front of the palate. Full and clean with the natural sweetness of Hawaiian cane sugar underneath.
- Finish: Light toasted coconut, hints of fresh lime zest, and the slightest caramelized pineapple. Crisp and inviting.
