The Story
Discontinued in 2018. Gold Editor's Choice, Whisky Magazine. World Whisky Award winner. One of the most celebrated blended whiskies ever produced — and one you can no longer buy new.
Hibiki 17 Year was discontinued by Suntory in 2018 — the same inventory pressure that had already claimed the 12 Year in 2015. Global demand for Japanese whisky exceeded the available stock of 17-year-old spirit, and rather than compromise the blend, Suntory stopped producing it. The 17 Year will not be returning to regular production.
During its production run, Hibiki 17 was the most acclaimed expression in the range — winning a Gold Editor's Choice from Whisky Magazine and the top prize at the World Whisky Awards 2010. It was the benchmark for what blended Japanese whisky could achieve: spicy, sophisticated, and genuinely complex in a way that blind tasters routinely mistook for something far older and more expensive.
Finding a bottle today requires a specialty retailer with legacy stock. This is one of those acquisitions that becomes meaningfully harder every year.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why was Hibiki 17 discontinued? Suntory discontinued the 17 Year in 2018 because global demand for Japanese whisky outpaced the available inventory of 17-year-old spirit. Whisky production cannot be rapidly scaled — every bottle in existence today was committed to a barrel 17 years before it was needed. The expression will not return to regular production.
- How does Hibiki 17 compare to Hibiki 21? The 17 Year is spicier, more vibrant, and less Mizunara-influenced than the 21 Year. The 21 Year adds four additional years and more pronounced Mizunara oak character, producing a deeper, more complex, and more incense-forward profile. Both are exceptional; the 17 Year's discontinuation makes it the more urgent acquisition.
- Is Hibiki 17 better than Japanese Harmony? Hibiki Japanese Harmony was introduced as a no-age-statement replacement. The 17 Year is generally considered more complex and structured due to the age statement and extended maturation. For drinkers who know both, the 17 Year is the preferred expression.
- Will Hibiki 17 ever come back? Suntory has not indicated any plans to reintroduce the 17 Year. The inventory constraint that drove the discontinuation has not been resolved. Existing bottles are the total remaining supply.
