The Story

6 years. 86 proof. Import. 1985. Heaven Hill — a 1985 import-format vintage expression from Heaven Hill's pre-1996 fire era, now over 40 years from original bottling and one of the oldest Heaven Hill expressions in the current Wooden Cork collection.

The 1996 Heaven Hill fire destroyed the original Bardstown distillery and over 90,000 barrels of aging bourbon — one of the largest whiskey disasters in American history. All Heaven Hill production from before that date carries 'pre-fire' significance that post-fire production cannot replicate. This 1985 import was bottled 11 years before the fire, from stock produced entirely at the original pre-fire distillery.

The Import designation identifies this as a bottle produced for international export markets — the format in which much of Heaven Hill's premium aged production left the US during the pre-revival era when domestic demand was limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why does the 1996 Heaven Hill fire matter for pre-fire bottles? The fire destroyed the original distillery and 90,000+ barrels. All production from the original facility is now fixed in quantity and can never be replenished. Pre-fire Heaven Hill is a closed set; this 1985 expression is from 11 years before the disaster.
  • What is the Import designation? Bottles produced specifically for international export markets, which received much of Heaven Hill's premium production during the pre-revival era when domestic demand was limited.
