The Story

26 years. Exclusively ex-bourbon casks from the Kelvin Cooperage. Glenfiddich's first ongoing release aged entirely in American oak — and the result is unlike anything else in the portfolio.

Every other expression in Glenfiddich's core range uses sherry or a combination of sherry and bourbon casks. The Excellence 26 Year breaks from that tradition entirely: aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks sourced from the Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky — which, like Glenfiddich, is independently owned and family-run. The shared values were intentional; so is the result.

Twenty-six years in American oak produces a whisky that is dramatically different from the sherry-influenced 30 Year or 40 Year. The color runs deeper amber from the extended oak contact, the nose opens with vanilla and toffee rather than dried fruit, and the palate is a layered fruit bomb anchored by oak spice and cinnamon. It is Glenfiddich's Speyside character expressed through an entirely American oak lens — complex, rich, and distinctive.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep amber with warm orange highlights from prolonged American oak contact.
  • Aroma: Rich vanilla, toffee, and a hint of warming spice. More American whiskey-adjacent than any other Glenfiddich expression.
  • Palate: A layered fruit bomb — dried apricot, ripe fig, and orchard fruit alongside waves of oak spice, cinnamon, and a creamy toffee sweetness. Full-bodied with exceptional integration.
  • Finish: Long, smooth, and sweetly satisfying — lingering oak spice and dried fruit fading into a warm, clean close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is the Glenfiddich Excellence 26 Year different from the 30 Year? The 30 Year uses a combination of sherry and bourbon casks, producing the classic Glenfiddich profile of dried fruit, chocolate, and integrated oak. The Excellence 26 Year is aged exclusively in ex-bourbon American oak, producing a fundamentally different whisky — more vanilla-forward, less fruit-dark, with a cinnamon and toffee character that leans closer to American whiskey than standard Speyside single malt.
  • What is the Kelvin Cooperage? The Kelvin Cooperage is a family-owned cask manufacturer based in Kentucky, known for producing high-quality American oak barrels for the bourbon industry. Glenfiddich specifically sourced ex-bourbon casks from Kelvin for the Excellence 26 Year — a deliberate provenance choice that parallels their own family-owned, independent ethos.
  • Is Glenfiddich Excellence 26 Year good for bourbon drinkers? Yes. The exclusive American oak maturation produces a flavor profile closer to aged American whiskey than most single malts. Bourbon drinkers exploring Scotch often find the Excellence 26 Year the most immediately approachable premium Speyside expression available.
  • Is the Glenfiddich Excellence 26 Year part of an ongoing range? Yes — it is Glenfiddich's first ongoing bourbon cask release at this age level, distinguishing it from one-off limited releases. That said, production is limited by the availability of 26-year-old spirit and appropriately sourced casks.
