The Story
21 years. Caribbean Rum Cask Finish. Gran Reserva. Glenfiddich — Speyside single malt aged 21 years and finished in hand-selected Caribbean rum casks, the finishing process that distinguishes the 21 Year Gran Reserva from every other Glenfiddich expression through the addition of tropical fruit, banana, and molasses notes that no European cask can produce.
The Caribbean rum cask finishing program was introduced to differentiate the 21 Year from the sherry-and-bourbon matured 18 Year — adding a warm-climate sweetness tradition to the cool Speyside spirit base. The rum casks carry residual molasses and tropical fruit character from their time in the Caribbean before being shipped to Dufftown, where the 21-year-old Glenfiddich completes its development in these exotic vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Caribbean rum cask finishing add to Scotch whisky? Rum casks carry residual molasses, tropical fruit, and banana character from their previous Caribbean life — adding warm-climate sweetness that European sherry or bourbon casks cannot produce. The contrast between the cool Speyside spirit and the tropical cask creates the Gran Reserva's distinctive profile.
- How does the 21 Year compare to the 23 Year Grand Cru also in the collection? The 21 Year uses rum cask finishing for tropical sweetness. The 23 Year Grand Cru uses French cuve – Champagne casks for a completely different finishing style. Both are premium finishing experiments beyond the standard 18 Year format.
